Filtered cigarettes have been around since the 1890s, however because there wasn't a machine which could roll them, they were done by hand until 1929 when a machine could add the filter when rolling cigarettes. DuMarier in Britain was the first commercially available. The issue is more about what they were filtered with. Charcoal, cork and paper were first used until cellulose acetate became popular. Viceroy, Kool and Raleigh all offered filters before World War II. Filter cigarettes were considered feminine, though, and Marlboro and Tareyton were marketed predominantly to women. Marlboro reversed its marketing in 1953 and became a man's brand. Non-filtered were still the most popular variety until the health issues cropped up in the 1950s and 1960s. Mitigating measures like the micronite filter and the addition of menthol were used to increase sales, although neither effecting the cancer causing qualities of cigarettes.
