Places with polar climates are very cold, snowy and windy. The temperatures rarely rise above 30ºF and drop as low as -129ºF, now that's some seriously cold weather! Here are some amazing animals that can live in these freezing cold climates: Arctic Terns:These birds have beaks the size of their head! They have thick feathers to keep them warm in cold climate and eat different animals, like fish. In the summer, these birds can eat enough to grow twice their size. ---- Arctic Hares: They look a lot like rabbits, but Arctic Hares are usually bigger and their fur changes colors! Their fur is all white in the winter, but it can change to a blue-gray or brown color in the summer. They have very big feet to help them move quickly across the snow and strong claws to dig for food. They eat berries, twigs and plants. ---- Emperor Penguins: They are birds that can't fly, but can swim! Their wings are shaped like flippers on a fish, that's why it is easy for them to swim, not fly. Penguins eat fish, and can hold their breath under water for about 18 minutes. ---- Musk Oxen: These gigantic animals have a stinky, musky smell and that is why they are called "Musk Ox". They like being together so they travel in groups called herds. They eat grass, shrubs and other plants, no meat. Their long thick hair helps keep them warm in the cold climate. ---- Polar Bears: Their fur looks white, but it's actually clear! The color of their fur makes it easy for the heat from the sun to stay trapped close to their bodies keeping them warm in cold climate. They are good swimmers and eat big blubbery animals like seals. ---- Snowy Owls:Sometimes they make dog-like barking sounds when they get excited! The male owls are mostly white and the female owls are covered with dark spots. Fluffy feathers cover their whole body, even their feet - to help keep them warm in the cold climate. These owls eats things like mice and fish. ---- Humpback Whales: They may live in the water, but whales have to breathe oxygen to stay alive - just like people do! When they need air, it comes to the surface and breathes through a big blowhole on its head. These whales do not live in Antarctica all the time, but they travel to Antarctica to find food. They eat things like fish and squid. ---- White Foxes: They can walk fast on ice without slipping! They have special padded feet that give them grip. They also have large, bushy tails they use to wrap around themselves like a blanket to keep them warm in the cold climate. Arctic foxes mostly eat mice and birds, but they'll also eat berries. Tons of different animals live in the snow, as manta species live in both the Arctic and the Antarctic. There is on also snow in places like Nepal, where there are lots of mountains, and more animals live there.
