Interphase is in fact NOT a part of mitosis (as stated before) and is followed by mitosis. Interphase is 90% of the cell cycle whereas mitosis is only the conclusion/final completion of the cell cycle- 10%. However both are crucial. In interphase, the cells are in fact not dividing, the chromosomes and organelles are the ones that are being duplicated. This in turn causes the cell size to increase, not dividing. This then procedes to the final step, mitosis which includes: prophase, prometaphase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase.

This is the main life period of a cell during which it fulfills its specialized purpose and if it is to proceed to mitosis and divide, it is during this time that the cell doubles chromosome counts among other things, and prepares for mitosis. Mitosis begins when a cell completes doubling of chromosomes in interphase and enters prophase.

Because if the shorter leg was shorter than the longer leg was long, then the longer leg wouldn't be longer than the shorter leg is short. The short leg would be the longer one rather than the long one being the short one.
