Magnesium ion, usually in Mg+2 oxidation state is a magnesium atom with 2 absent electrons in the valence shell. Magnesium atom is in a neutral (0) oxidation state, which still contains the 2 electrons in the valence shell that are usually lost during ionization.

An ion is an atom that has gained or lost electrons, so an ion will have either a positive or negative charge. Magnesium is in group 2 on the Periodic Table and will most readially form the Mg+2 ion.

In a pure form, the element magnesium is a metal. In combination with other elements, it becomes part of an ionic compound or salt, which is quite different from a metal. Examples would include magnesium nitrate, magnesium sulfate, etc.

What are likely to form an ionic bond magnesium and sulfur or nitrogen and oxygen?

Magnesium and sulfur are much more likely than nitrogen and oxygen to form an ionic bond, because the difference in electronegativity between sulfur and magnesium is much greater than the difference in electronegativity between nitrogen and oxygen. Another way of phrasing the reason is that magnesium is a metal and sulfur a nonmetal, while nitrogen and oxygen are both nonmetals.
