First you need to know that an electric dryer is almost always a 30 amp 220 Volt power supply. Most small welders require a 50 amp 220 volt power supply. Check your welder's power requirement. If it requires 50 amps, it'll never work correctly on 30 amp.

The plug conversion is simple. The wire your dryer is powered by will have two "hot" legs, the red and black wires. These supply the 220 volt. Then it has a ground (bare copper or green conductor. And last it has a white wire, the neutral.

Your 3 prong plug on your welder only requires the two "hot" legs and the ground wire. You shunt the neutral white wire with a wire nut.

As long as the amperage is the same (usually 30 amps) change the plug on the welder.

How high to install a dryer receptacle?

For convenience I install the receptacle just above the backboard of the dryer. This way if the dryer is to be moved out of its location it can be unplugged before the move is started. Sometimes the dryer is located in a confined space and it is hard to reach down to the floor level to unplug the dryer with out becoming an acrobat.

Should a 3 wire 250 volt drier be grounded?

Yes, most definitely. Provisions for the ground wire in the dryer receptacle should be used. The feeder cable's ground wire is first grounded to the receptacle's junction box ground screw and then taken to the receptacle's ground terminal. The dryer plug configuration will match up to the dryers four wire plug in cable. When the plug is connected into the dryer receptacle the ground terminals of both devices will match and the ground wire will be continuous from the voltage source at the distribution panel and complete the circuit at the dryer. This low impedance electrical path will conduct any ground fault that could occur at the dryer and trip the feeder breaker of the dryer circuit, there by removing the fault current from the dryer circuit.

How do you know if clothes dryer is hard wired?

Hard wired means that there is no plug and receptacle in the circuit powering the dryer. What you will find is a metal jacketed cable that will come out of the wall or floor and go right into the dryer.

You were shocked by a dryer receptacle is there any danger?

Yes there is a serious danger. The breaker should be tripping under this condition and not allowing the frame of the dryer to become electrically energized. It means that the ground wire is missing from the dryer receptacle or the dryer cord is not grounded to the machine. Shut the breaker off to the dryer and remove the dryer receptacle. Look for a bare copper wire. It should be bonded to the box and then to the receptacles U shaped pin hole. If this end is fine check the dryer end where the cord goes into the back of the dryer to make sure the green ground wire is connected to the frame of the dryer. If you don't feel competent of doing this get some electrical help as this condition needs to be repaired before you use the dryer again. If you were shocked and recovered, you will be OK You should report it though because it could kill someone, for example, if they had a heart problem of some kind.

Is there an adapter for a NEMA 14-30 male plug to a NEMA 10-30 female receptacle?

No there is no adapter. Change your old dryer receptacle NEMA 10-30 to a new NEMA 14-30. This will allow you to plug the new dryer cord into the old wiring.Answer for USA, Canada and countries running a 60 Hz supply service.Range receptacle three to fourLook in the back of the dryer receptacle box that is in the wall. The three wires coming in should have a bare ground wire in the cable set. It wasn't brought to the receptacle because there was no place for it on the three wire receptacle. If you find it back there under a screw terminal just add another short piece of wire under the screw and then connect the other end of the short wire to the new ground terminal (G) on the new four position receptacle. The wire should be equal in size to the size of the wire that exists around the ground terminal now. If the house is so old that the dryer cable did not have a ground wire in it the code allows a separate green ground #10 wire to be taken from the breaker panel box to the existing range receptacle. This wire is to be bonded on each end. At the panel end to the ground buss and at the receptacle end around the ground screw at the back of the box unbroken and then to the new four position receptacle ground lug (G).Before you do any work yourself,on electrical circuits, equipment or appliancesalways use a test meter to ensure the circuit is, in fact, de energized.IF YOU ARE NOT ALREADY SURE YOU CAN DO THIS JOBSAFELY AND COMPETENTLYREFER THIS WORK TO QUALIFIED PROFESSIONALS.

How do you wire a 4 prong dryer cord to a 3 wire receptacle?

Using a red wire nut hook the 3 wires (of the same color) together with a short piece of wire of the same color. You now have 4 wires tied together. Now take the other end of the short wire and attach it to the outlet on the correct screw Do the same with the other 2 wires Please keep in mind to make sure the wire nut has securely fastened the wires. Loose connections cause heat which cause fire If you do not completely understand this answer please contact a qualified electrician

How do you safely connect to a 240V pullout fuse box used for pool equipment located in a detached garage as a temporary power source for a 240V millermatic 250 mig welder?

The voltage is correct, BUT, Your welder is going to draw more current than the pool pump did. The breaker, wiring, and the receptacle will have to be upgraded. In my opinion I have never seen a "temporary" connection!! ...pkazsr

How do you extend the electric outlet at the basement?

Parallel connect the new receptacle to a receptacle in the existing circuit. Black (hot) existing to black (new), white existing to white (new), ground existing to ground (new). Make the ground wire coming into the new receptacle box longer so that it can be looped around the ground screw located in the receptacle box first and then connect to the receptacle without having a break in the wire.

What is a 30A dryer cord?

A 30 amp dryer cord is the cord that comes attached to new clothes dryer. It is used to transfer the voltage from the wall receptacle to the dryer appliance. Earlier model dryers used to be hard wired directly from the distribution panel to the dryer. Hard wiring is no longer the case as people wanted to take there appliances with them when they moved from one home to another. New homes are now wired with 30 amp receptacles situated in the wall alcove where the dryer is to be situated. This allows the home owner to plug in the dryer without the hiring of an electrician to legally make the connection. Dryers that have been previously been hard wired can be upgraded with a 30 amp cord kit that can be purchased at any hardware store. Following the instructions included with the kits, any home owner can make the conversion and then connect their dryer into the dryer receptacle.

My 110 washer will work my 220 dryer will work. why will it throw breaker when both are plugged in on separate breakers?

Your 110 volt washer receptacle sounds like it is not a dedicated circuit directly fed from the distribution panel as it should be. It sounds like someone has tapped off of one side of the dryer receptacle hot and neutral terminals and run them to the receptacle for the washer. If true, this would have been done in the back side of the dryer receptacles which is located in the wall. You best get it checked out because it is likely the wire feeding the washer receptacle is a #14 rated at 15 amps and is undersized for a 30 amp breaker. A #10 wire has the capacity to be connected to a 30 amp breaker which you should find the dryer's connection to be.

How do you covert a two prong welder plug to a three prong and ground out let?

Need to know the amperage rating of the plug or the NEMA configuration of the plug and receptacle

Can you install two 220v receptacles for a welder in two different areas of your shop on the same circuit?

Technically no. In the USA the NFPA electrical code requires a separate circuit for each large appliance receptacle- there are a few exceptions (such as a heater and AC on same circuit) - I don't think the welder is one of the exceptions. In practice, as long as only one receptacle is used at a time, it will work fine Make sure that the wire size is correct for the current (amp) draw. This is taken off of the welder nameplate. Size the breaker to protect the wire size. If more that one welder gets plugged in the breaker will trip.
