Your owners manual should make specific recommendations. It depends largly on the type of hitch you are using: class II, class III, weight distributing, etc. According to the manual 6000 lbs with a factory towing package (which includes a transmission cooler), without it 2000 lbs.

According to my 1995 Grand Cherokee owners manual you can tow up to 6500 lbs with a tongue weight of 750 lbs as long as the Jeep meets the following equipment requirements: Class 3 or 4 Heavy Duty Hitch, no more than 10,500 GCWR (combined weight of vehicle and trailer), trailer no longer than 30 feet, automatic transmission with transmission cooler, heavy duty steering system, 3.73:1 differential ratio, and minimum tire size of P225/70R15. Factory installed tow packages were very common and included most of this equipment.
