The markings for timing is located behind the crank pulley, below the water pump. This is true for all Jeep Cherokees 1988-2001 I6 -4.0 I own 2001 Cherokee, my brother owns 89 Cherokee, my hommie owns, 92 Cherokee. Timing markings can only be seen when the serpentine belt has been removed.
Question cannot be answered as asked. Jeep Cherokee could describe a number of different Jeep vehicles over the years. Not all of them have the same motors and not all will have similar timing requirements. Be more specific with your question please and I'll be happy to help.
According to the Haynes repair manual the timing mark for this vehicle should be set to 12 degrees BTDC (below top dead center) for an Automatic transmission and 10 degrees BTDC for a manual transmission.
Purchase a Chilton's repair manual for that vehicle from your local auto parts store. It will save you time and money.
