The frets themselves are the thick metal wires embedded in the neck of a guitar on the finger board where you form the chords. When you say the 1st fret, though, it means the space between the nut (or fret 0, between the tuning pegs and the fret board) and the first fret. The guitarist applies pressure at this space which causes the string to be depressed exactly at the fret and, when struck, produce the note exactly 1 step higher than the fret before. Each fret represents a diatonic note, following the standard tempered scale. This means that the guitar is a tempered instrument, producing standardized pitches where the string meets the fret rather than where the guitarist's finger hits the string.

The process of re-fretting a guitar is not one that is lightly taken. I only suggest performing a re-fret if you don't care if you damage the guitar - or if you have enough expertise that if you do damage the guitar (which you will when you have to refret) that you can afford to fix it or replace it all together. There are a few things you will need to research before attempting a re-fret. 1. Were the frets pressed in, glued in, slid in from the side - or a combination of any of these methods? 2. Is there a sealer over the frets? (Some maple neck Guitars have the clear coat sprayed right over the frets!) 3. Is a refret needed? Can you just replace 1 or 2 frets? Can you even just file down the frets instead of replacing them? 4. Are you replacing the frets with the same gauge fret wire or does the player want a different fret type reinstalled?

Once you can answer these questions you should then prepare by having all the right tools. (Fret Puller, Fret Hammer, Fret Press, Fret Files, End Nippers, clamps for the neck if needed. truss rod adjustment tools, Straight edges, rulers, Radiused fretboard file....) Depending on the type of wood the neck is made from will slightly alter the method of fret replacement. (Is it hard wood or softer?) In this example I will share how I replaced frets on an early 1900's Gibson Style Mandolin. (It had been a "wall display" at my friend's grandmothers house. When she died - he inherted it and wanted to play it instead of hanging it on the wall... it was quite a restoration process.) 1. Took off strings (more like brittle wires).

2. Cleaned... Cleaned.. Cleaned... I used watered down D65 and for the really gross spots I used lighter fluid. (Make sure you test an inconspicous area first - some finishes don't like lighter fluid.)

3. Removed the neck from the body. Used a heat lamp to soften the glue.

4. Oiled the fretboard very very very well... It was extremely dry. It would have cracked had I just pulled out the frets. All of the oil helped to soften the wood also.

5. I used a heat lamp again to make pulling the frets easier. Used the fret pullers and gently removed the frets with a very slow and defined precise movement.

6. Sanded the fretboard down just enough to make it fresh and level and have the proper radius. (Flat in this case.)

7. Pressed in new frets one at a time using a fret press.

8. Carefully crowned frets and filed edges to not stick out or be rough. (Use a mask on the neck and fretboard to avoid any damage to the wood.)

9. Used a straightedge to ensure there were no high or low spots. (Use a small straight edge also as a "rocker".)

10. Replaced nut with new bone nut. That's how I did it in this one case. Remember that each job will be different and require different methods and tools. If you aren't sure - contact a professional. It's always better to not fix it if it isn't broke...

most guitars have dots on the frets called inlays. they make it easier to know which fret you are on, they are marked usually like this 3 5 7 9 12 15 17 19 21 (24) each number is the dot on that fret starting from the headstock to the pickups. hope that helps
