If you are a beginner, then you should not attempt this operation because it is not easy. But if you are sure you can go through with this, then follow these instructions.
Remove the gas tank, the seats, then the crank case oil breather tank mounting screw for better to get to the area below it. Also remove the right side panel that covers the radiator cap. The choke cable is attached to a boot which screws in a jet that is held in place by a spring. Do not loosen the spring. You need needle nose pliers for this job. Unscrew the boot and jet assembly and then removed it from the cable. Remove the boot as well (there is a right angle pipe with a rubber cover on it). The Y connection on the choke cable has snap anchors next to the radiator cap use these for guidance and for correct placeing of the new cable. Before installing the new cable it is useful to verify if it is the correct length by plaicing it in position over the frame of the bike before you swap the cables. Pull out the carburetor wire ends of the cable and feed it through to the front of the bike, then remove it from the handlebar housing as it is more convenient to follow that route and then attach the carburetor ends first. This will give you the extra length you need to get the SE valve sensors back onto the carburetors with fewer problems. The most difficult thing is probably screwing the boots back into the carburetors since the space for working there is very limited. Therefore, use shapr ended pliers such as needle nose ones. The new choke cable may look like it is too short when not fully in place, just be prepared for this. Be careful when shopping for the cable that it is the right one.

yes sir. that is right.
The 1200 choke system uses a fuel enrichening circuit controlled by a bystarter valve. You would have to remove the lowers and carb. cover to see where the cable is attached.
The procedure is somewhat different on different kinds of bikes but basically you have to disengage the cable at the choke lever on the handlebars or closer to the engine, depending on the type of bike. Then, you have to unfasten the part that is connected to the carburetor or carburetors. The cable may need to be adjusted to fit properly. Look for the specific model and year of bike or vehicle you have and how to change the choke cable.
(1) Loosen the choke cable at the cable control bracket but do not remove it. (2) Pull cable knob or lever all the way to closed position. (3) Manually close the choke baffle all the way. (4) Tighten the choke cable at the cable control bracket. (5) Ensure choke opens and closes properly by pushing and/or pulling the cable knob or lever.
The choke lever should be down for the choke to be off. In the raised position is choke on.
You need to adjust the Vernier knob on the choke. It is located behind the choke knob. It is a knurled ring that you tighten up to tighten the shaft friction on the choke cable
They are all in the same repair manual from 1982-1988 so it looks like they will interchange.
