He joined in 2003 after an original one off presentation on the show in 1999. He joined because he took the micky out of Jeremy and Jeremy liked it and encouraged producing team to have him as third presenter.

∙ 12y agoi just watched Top Gear season 16 episode 3 and in the film James may pretended to drive off of a cliff and rather than showing up in the studio at the end of the film he was just gone i think he may have left for good i guess we'll see next week I'll keep u posted mate

∙ 13y agoJames May first co-presented the old Top Gear format in 1999. In was later shut down by the BBC because of poor viewing figures. James May then joined Top Gear again in 2003 (with the new format) where it quickly became a very popular TV show.

Why did James evans want to leave the show good times?
When the show was created, the parents were going to be the stars and the main characters. After JJ's popularity took off, he was made the main character. John Amos was not happy with the change and wanted out of the show.
