In the second movie the car ran on gasoline and the time circuits and flux capacitor ran on rubbish (that the new Mr Fusion attatchment turned into power).
In the third movie the car ran on gasoline (but they were in 1885 so they had to use a train to push it instead) and the time circuits and flux capacitor ran on rubbish still.

∙ 13y agoThe Nuclear Reactor/Mr. Fusion Located on the rear of the car give the car 1.21 Giggawatts of electricity into the Flux Capacitor. The Flux Capacitor Is what makes time Travel Possible. The Time Circuits indicate when your going, when you are, and when you've been. The Time circuits are controlled by a small keypad where you can type a date or time of your choosing, So for example "102619851300" would show up as "OCT 26 1985 1:00 PM". So the Nuclear Reactor/Mr. Fusion powers the Flux Capacitor which is controlled by the Time Circuits. To Properly activate the Flux Capacitor the car needs to be going 88 MPH while the Flux Capacitor is simultaneously getting the 1.21 Giggawatts of electricity.
