The Chinese were the earliest of the Asian immigrants and the first of them were members of the 1778 Cook expedition. If they "jumped ship" or were released from their contracts is not known. Other joined the community in 1788 and 1789 and most of these were the earliest small businessmen of the Islands. They were not a part of any labor force contracted to work in the fields producing "things" for the white man, but were entrepreneurs seeking their fortune in the hope of returning home as wealthy men after 20 or 30 years.
