generally, both side would have dug the trenches at about the same time.
the defending side would dig them as a defensive measure and if the attacking side was unable to break the line they would then dig their own trenches to provide cover for reinforcements and as a base for future attacks.
in the first world war it was the Germans that first dug trenches on the high ground at the battle of the Marne early in the war. British and French forces in turn dug trenches as a base of further attacks. the network of trenches then began to spread until it stretched from neutral Switzerland to the sea.
small trench networks were dug in the second world war as defensive positions but the appearance of the sub machine gun and more advanced camouflage and combat techniques limited their effectivness.

Trench Warfare
fighting in trenches
Trench Warfare took place most notably in World War I. This type of warfare involved digging trenches (large lines about 12 feet deep) and slowly wearing down the enemy. Trenches were a good shelter from enemy small arms fire and well protected from most artillery strikes. Hope this helped. Type Trench Warfare Wiki into google.

Well this one seems kind of obvious, but Trench Warfare is called Trench Warfare because the men fought in Trenches during WW1 in which trench warfare was utilized.

Trench Warfare
Trench warfare developed on the Western Front during World War I due to the stalemate between the Allied and Central Powers, with both sides digging trenches for protection. On the Eastern Front, the vast open spaces and more fluid military tactics made trench warfare less practical.
The reality of the trench warfare was that the conditions were terrible. The mean often got trench foot which lead to lose of the feet because of the conditions in the trenches.
