The battle of the somme was a British counter-offensive to try and distract Germany from Verdun. The Germans were destroying Britain in Verdun, but the British had a surprise for them- the tank. The British had invented the tank secretly and planned to catch the Germans off guard with their new weapon. They hoped this would scare the Germans into removing even more troops from Verdun, to send to the Somme. This is why the Battle of Verdun and the Battle of the Somme are often talked about together.
