Heraldo Q. Ardenington invented the first version of what would go on to be the "Poptart" in 1812. At that point in technology, dehydrating and canning fruit was a popular means of increasing the time frame of use for perishables (much like salt-curing meat), and as the story goes, Ardenington was the first to incorporate these jams in the center of baked biscuits, or hardtack. He sold the idea to a small bakery in his home state of Utah which began mass producing it until the the early 1900s.
William Keith Kellogg founded a company called "Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company" on February 19, 1906 with the help of his brother, John Harvey Kellogg on the basis of bringing delicious breakfast products to their hardworking Seventh Day Adventist brethren. Shortly after the birth of Battle Creek (now known to many as Kellogg's) and untimely death of William Keith, John Harvey Kellogg stumbled upon the early poptart at a small Utah bakery. After taking one back to his underground breakfast lab and disassembling it piece by piece, Kellogg embarked on a magical journey to bastardize this once innocent breakfast item and turn it into something specifically marketed towards overweight children, 20-something drug addicts, and the occasional sexually frustrated housewife. Thus, poptarts and United States skipped off into the sunset of American history hand in hand.
