The Reformation began October 31, 1517, when Martin Luther nailed his 95 thesis on the cathedral door. The Reformation ended in 1563 with the closing of The Council of Trent. Protestantism had existed earlier. Abelard and Ockham have been accused of being Protestants. Wycliff created the lollards and the movement created protestants in much of Europe. Many mendicant monks had tried to reform the Roman Catholic Church. It was not until the reformation that the Roman Catholic Church was willing to take steps toward reform. After the Reformation the Roman Catholic Church took copies of Calvin's Institutes and facing most of the criticisms, reworked its organization and procedures. At that point, the Reformation was complete.
