162 were scheduled for each team in both leagues. Some teams had games rained out and were never re-scheduled.

The LA Dodgers and the SF Giants had identical records after 162 games, so the two teams played three more games after that. These extra games were counted as regular season games for all record keeping.

The American League went to a 162 game schedule when it expanded from 8 to 10 teams in 1961. The National League went to 162 the next year, 1962 when it also expanded to 10 teams. By the way, the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers actually played 165 games as they had to go to a best of three playoff to decided the championship after the two teams tied after 162 games. The Giants won the playoff two wins to one, but went on to lose the World Series to the New York Yankees 4 games to 3.

Actually it went from 154 games which was established in 1904 and modified in 1919, and then switched to 162 games in 1961 for the American League and then in 1962 for the National League....
