Different notable Romans were appointed dictators at various times during the republican period. Cincinatus is one of the most famous. He was at his plough when a delegation from the Senate brought him his commission as dictator. When the emergency ended, he resigned his Dictatorship and returned to ploughing his field. Quintus Fabius Maximus was appointed dictator twice during the 2nd Punic War. Julius Caesar was appointed dictator four times.

During the 482 years of the republic a dictator was appointed 88 times. I total 75 men were appointed dictators. One man was appointed five times (Marius Furius Camillus), two men were appointed four times (Lucius Papirius Cursor and Julius Caesar) three men were appointed three times (Mamercus Aemilius Mamercinus, Titus Manlius Imperiosus Torquatus and Marcus Valerius Corvus). Six men were appointed twice.

The dictator was an extraordinary officer of state who was appointed by the consuls at times of emergency with a very specific mandate which was established by senatorial decree. His term of office was six months. Usually he was appointed to deal with a military emergency (rei gerundae causa), when there was a need for the army to be commanded by one man (normally the two annually elected consuls were both commanders of the army) or to be commanded by a man with better military leaderships skills. During the Second Punic War eight men were appointed for the purpose of holding the election of the next consuls (Comitiorum habendorum causa) and one man was appointed for the purpose of enrolling new senators (Senatus legendi causa) when many of them died at the battle of Cannae. Prior to the Second Punic War a dictator had been elected to hold the election of the consuls twelve times. One dictator was appointed to suppress a rebellion (Seditionis sedandae causa).

There were two exceptions to the six-month term of the dictator. On was Lucius Cornelius Sulla who was appointed for one year to reform the constitution (Legibus faciendis et rei publicae constituendae causa). The other one was Julius Caesar. He used the power he gained by winning a civil war to have the senate give him a dictatorial mandate four times. The first time it was for the purpose of holding elections to have himself elected consul. He resigned after 17 days. The second time he had himself appointed for one year, the third for 10 years and the fourth for life.

Who was the first dictator of Ancient Rome?

The term dictator is related to the early Roman state [the Republic]. At the time it did not have any negative meaning: it was just the Roman title given to someone who got complete - and temporary - executive powers in times of emergency. The first man ever to formally carry the Roman title 'dictator' was Titus Lartius Flavus, around 500 BC. The first dictator with the current (negative) meaning of the word was Publius Cornelius Sulla in 212 BC, who used dictatorial powers to do away with his personal enemies; the last one, at least in ancient Rome, was Julius Caesar.
