Benito Mussolini is significant because he was the principle theorist of Facism and the first to establish a Facist state. While his Facism was uniquely Italian, he created general principles that would be imitated by others such as Hitler. His conversion of Italy into a Facist state was also signicant in its attacks on civil and political rights. He is also significant for his invasions of Ethiopia, Albania, and for prompting the Axis invasion of Greece. He is notable for bringing Italy into the Axis alliance as well.

Benito Mussolini went from socialism supporter while living in Switzerland to pro-World War I supporter and draftee upon his return to Italy. After serving in the war , he formed the Fascist Party in 1919 as a protest to high unemployment for war veterans. Known as the â??Black Shirtsâ??, they had a reputation for terrorizing their political opponents. The Fascists joined the coalition government in 1921. Invited by King Victor Emmanuel to form a government, Mussolini transformed Italy into a Dictatorship, proclaiming himself El Dulce. He helped Francoâ??s Fascist government with military support and joined the Axis prior to losing power in 1943 and being executed in 1945.
