Inevitably, lots of things happened in Australia in 1997, as they did in all countries.

A major event in 1997 for Australia was the Thredbo landslide disaster.

On 30 July 1997, the Alpine Way above the ski resort town of Thredbo, in the Snowy Mountains, gave way, as a result of torrential rain on an essentially landfill-raised road. This caused tonnes of mud and water to rush down the mountainside, crushing Carinya Lodge, which then pushed down the Bimbadeen Lodge, killing 18 staff.

The reason this was such a major event in Australia was that, three days after the collapse of the lodges, one lone skiing instructor by the name of Stuart Diver was pulled out alive, suffering severe hypothermia. He had been trapped next to the body of his dead wife for three days.

Many things happened in Australia in 1989, but arguably one of the most remembered was the Newcastle earthquake. It was the most devastating earthquake in Australia, and the only one that has (to date) resulted in deaths. Occurring on 28 December 1989, it measured 5.6 on the Richter scale, and its effects were felt throughout central-eastern New South Wales. There were reports of damage to buildings in Scone, Gladstone and Sydney, which is 800km away. The shaking was even felt in tall buildings in cities over 5000km away.

Thirteen people were killed, and 35,000 homes, 147 schools and 3,000 other structures in the region collapsed. Most of the damage and deaths happened when the walls and floors of the Newcastle Workers Club collapsed. Originally, a US report on the earthquake suggested that the disaster was caused by stress resulting from 200 years of underground coal mining. Australian geoscientists disagreed with this claim, claiming that the Hunter Valley has been prone to minor earthquakes for years. Other evidence suggested that the hypocentre of the earthquake lay too deep underground - 12 kilometres - for it to have been caused by mining.

Nothing historic happened on August 24, in Australia.

However, on August 23, all of Australia's 1,645 domestic airline pilots resign over an airline's move to sack and sue them over a dispute, following a strike.

Events that did occur on the 24:

  • Colombia's cocaine traffickers declare "total and absolute war" against the government and begin a series of bombings and arson attacks.
  • Voyager 2 makes its closest approach to Neptune.
  • Record-setting Baseball player Pete Rose agrees to a lifetime ban from the sport following allegations of illegal gambling, thereby preventing his induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
  • Indonesia's first privately owned television station, Rajawali Citra Televisi Indonesia, (RCTI) begins broadcasting.

Some events that happened in Australia 1998 include: * During the month of January, three people were killed in floods in Katherine, NT. * On 8 January 1998, the 'Melbourne Herald Sun' reported that an enormous, unidentified creature had washed up on the coast of Tasmania in the previous month. The decomposing carcass, 5 metres long, 2 metres wide and weighing approximately 4 tonnes, had appeared on Four Mile Beach, northwest of Zeehan. * During February and March, Brisbane and most of South-East Queensland was hit by a series of blackouts after generators broke down at four major power stations. * A mail bomb exploded in a Canberra post office. * 5 firefighters were killed in bushfires in Linton, Victoria. * The Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race held on Boxing Day was marred by tragedy when weather conditions caused five boats to sink, resulting in 6 deaths. Out of 115 boats that started the race, only 44 made it to Hobart. * On 30 December 1998 one of a set of stegosaurus prints stolen from a sacred Aboriginal site near Broome was recovered.
