∙ 13y agoIf you mean in the ancient Roman world, they wore their ordinary street clothes. Roman justice was carried out very quickly. They had no prisons as we know them today. Their prisons were more like our jails, merely holding places until the final sentence was known.
If you mean the convicts transported to Australia, which is the more common understanding of the term, they also wore just their own clothes. Contrary to common belief, convicts did not have "uniforms". They wore just the clothes they were wearing at the time of their sentencing. Some convicts had a second set of clothes, but these were invariably stolen enroute to Australia

∙ 12y agoAustralian convicts in the First Fleet wore just the clothing in which they were convicted. They were not allocated any clothes or uniform: nor were they permitted to pack any clothing.
Once they arrived in New South Wales, material was allocated for clothing. This material was then made into suitable clothing for the men and women convicts.
