Iron/steel for bombs, artillery shells; oil to run Japan's war machines (airplanes, tanks, warships), copper & lead for bullets. Anything that would further Japan's conquests were stopped.

The JApanese were fighting the war with Germany and America had made talks with the allies to join their side, and obviously Japan wasn't happy about this. They had Intel that the whole American navy was harbored at Pearl, so thaey attacked it brutally. The AMerican navy was not all in Pearl, and lo, the Japs made their biggest mistake of the War.

Japan wanted to attack Pearl Harbor for two reasons

1. They were angry at the United states for stopping trade with them in 1941, the same year they bombed the Harbor

2. They wanted to expand their country, become what the roman empire was.

Japan attacked United States at Pearl Harbor because US set embargo on Japan which meant that they cannot trade other countries including US.
