In 1766, the Townshend Acts were adopted. This allowed Parliament to tax

the colonies on tea, lead, paint, paper, and many other items. In 1770, the Townshend Acts were

repealed except for the tax on tea. This was to show the colonies that the British government had more

power than them. For most of the time, the tax was ignored as the colonists bought most of their

tea from Dutch smugglers.

The French and Indian war was expensive for the British. When the war was concluding, King

George The Third and his government looked into taxing the British colonies to gain their money lost

with the war. Well, the colonists drank a lot of tea. Their average consumption was 1.2 million gallons a

year. For the English, it was an everyday beverage. They were consuming so much, the King knew he

could make money off of it, by charging a tax with every load of tea they bought. There was a tax on

from Holland. When the king found out, he passed acts on the tea. The colonists were extremely angry,

feeling only representatives in their country had the

right to motion and pass laws.

Soon the the 1773 Tea Act was passed. This act allowed English East India Company to sell tea

to Americans, but there was still a tax. The tea company could ship tea straight to America, sold

by a certain group of merchants. Today, the tea would be valued at over one million dollars. The

Patriots, or the ones who disapproved of Britain, tried convincing the Loyalists, those still loyal

to Britain, to refuse the tea sold to them, but they ignored them. This lead the Patriots to

embarrass them in public and constantly harassing them.

They decided it was time for a plan, because they were not going to take this from the Britain

anymore. Some people who wanted this to be stopped posted a handbill on it that read:

This is the original handbill that was passed out to organize the Boston Tea Party. what was going to happen next. On November 29, 1773, thousands of people gathered at Faneuil Hall.

It was so crowded they had to switch locations to the Old South Meeting House. These meeting were

called the "Body of the People" or the "Sons of Liberty" At the meeting they voted to have twenty-five

men stand guard and make sure the East India Company, Chinese Tea, would not be shipped. These

meeting were the beginning of what would become the Boston Tea Party. They decided to board the

four ships that would be coming with tea, but they did not know the ship William never came and got

stranded, and the tea from that vessel was never received.

Then, on the day the Boston Tea Party took place, December 16, 1733 at 9pm, in Griffin's

Wharf, after the officials in Boston refused to return three shiploads of taxed tea to Britain, a group of

colonists dressed as Mohawk Indians, (to hide their real identity) and boarded the Dartmouth, the

Eleanor, and the Beaver cargo vessels and dumped all three hundred forty-two (342) cases, five

hundred thousand gallons (500,000) of tea into the Boston Harbor as a protest. These men included

Samuel Adams, John Hancock, and Paul Revere but one hundred thirteen (113) other men participated.

One of the participants tried to steal some of the tea, and he was punished by the Sons of Liberty. The

whole thing took at least three hours, to dump out all the tea. While the tea was being thrown

overboard, British armed ships surrounded, but they never tried to resist them. As a punishment, the

intolerable acts were passed, the Boston Harbor was closed, and all the dumped tea had to be paid

back, whichwas nine thousand six hundred fifty-nine pounds total (£9,659) worth of damage in 1773

currency.The total would be worth one million dollars ($1,000,000) today. The colonists sang a song

about the Boston Tea Party. It went like this:
