Very good question, which must be answered carefully...

people were afraid: companies that produced synthetic fibres needed to get rid of hemp which was the most common fibre in the late 1800's. Fuel companies, fossil fuels, saw cannabis as a major obstacle to their potentially massive profits.

Its illegality has no relevance to the modern day, claims that its causes scizophrenia and other mental illnesses have been written off. THERE IS NO TRUE AND FAIR REASON FOR ITS ILLEGALITY!
