The circulatory system consists of the heart, blood and blood vessels.

The functions of the circulatory system are:

  • Transport gases, like oxygen from the lungs to cells around the body and carbon dioxide from the cells to the lungs.
  • Transport nutrients like glucose.
  • Transport wastes from cells to organs that play the role of eliminating them.
  • It contains cells that fight infections and defend against foreign bodies.
  • Maintains the pH levels and ionic concentration of fluids in the body.
  • Helps maintain the body temperature, this is especially important in warm blooded animals like humans.
  • Transports hormones from their sources to the target tissues
  • Transports drugs and medicines to the target organs
  • absorption of the digested food from the alimentary canal (except lipids & fats)

The cardiovascular system is a complex network of the heart, blood vessels and blood. It's job is to deliver nutrients to the body and remove byproducts from the tissues

A muscular pump called the heart is how the circulatory system functions. The heart pumps oxygenated blood throughout the body by way of arteries and capillaries. Carbon dioxide waste is picked up in the blood and brought back to the heart by veins to be pumped into the lungs to be expelled while picking up fresh oxygen.

It carries nutrients, including oxygen, via the arterial system, to every cell in the body. (The exchange occurs at the level of the capillaries.) It also carries away waste products, including carbon dioxide, by way of the venous system (to the lungs, kidneys and intestinal system).
