D&C stands for dilatation & curettage. It's used as a shorhand term to mean that a woman needs to have the interior lining of her womb scraped away. This can be for many different reasons ranging from excessive tissues buildup causing heavy periods to retention of some of the products of a miscarriage. Usually done on an outpatient basis and usually you feel cramping & sore for a few days

Dilation and Curettage. Essentially scraping out the uterus. This is what they do for therapeutic abortions, also in cases of spontaneous abortion (miscarrage), endometriosis, retained placenta, and I'm sure for other reasons as well.

D and C: Stands for dilatation and curettage. This is a very common gynecologic procedure in which the cervix of the uterus is expanded (dilated) so the cervical canal and endometrium (the uterine lining) can be scraped off with a spoon-shaped instrument called a curet or curette. This is a relatively minor procedure.
