You didn't mention if you were arguing and yelling at him as well. If you are silent and he's yelling and raging on then it's time to kick this waste of skin out! It will only get worse.

But specifically, in a relationship, any sort of yelling and condescending behavior (which I assume is what you mean by "talking down"), particularly by a man toward a woman, is at best a sign of deep insecurity, and at worst evidence of a narcissistic personality. If you have any suspicion that it may be the latter (Google "narcissistic personality disorder" for other characteristics), you need to get as far away as you can, now. Trust me, you do not want to be in a relationship of any sort with a narcissist.
