The sternocleidomastoid muscle, also known as sternomastoid and comonly abbreviated as SCM, is a paired muscle in the superficial layers of the anterior portion of the neck. It acts to flex and rotate the head.

∙ 13y agoThe sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle allows for flexion of the neck, hyperextends the head, laterally bends the neck and rotates the face to the opposite side. For example: when the right SCM muscle contracts, your neck/head rotates so you are looking over your left shoulder.
