Normally, a dentist would prescribe antibiotics before doing a dental procedure (root canal, dental extraction or gum treatment). The dentist can also drain the abscess for instant results, but this cannot be done all the time, depending on the severity of the infection.

Ice packs can help with the swelling. Warm salt water rinses with releve pressure. See a denistist or oral sergen as soon as possible. Once the area is infected aggressive antibotics will need to be used.

Put some salt in warm water, then rinse your mouth with it. Once you have done so, place some myhrr on a cotton-tip and smear it all over the abcess. You could also try going to the doctor and asking for antibiotics and painkillers; they will probably give you the first one and tell you to take a generic painkiller available without prescription.

An abscessed tooth is an infection around the root or between the teeth and gums (pimple like swelling on your gums) that can be extremely painful . Abscesses can be a very serious condition that can damage the surrounding teeth and gums and spread to other parts of the body.

  • Apply a cold compress on your mouth or cheek, to reduce swelling (apply for 20 minutes, three or four times a day).
  • To ease the pain, rinse out your mouth with a mild solution of salt water (1/2 tsp. salt to 8 oz. water). Do this several times per day.
  • Get in to see your dentist as soon as possible, you will most likely need antibiotics. You may need to have the tooth extracted.

To treat the pain of a tooth abscess you can use a hot tea compress against it, your favorite pain killer such as asprin, or a topical oral pain cream. You should see a dentist immediately for treatment.

Abcesses are potentially dangerous, they contain dead bacteria and body tissue, they also contain immune cells and alive bacteria that your immune cells are trying to fight.

The best thing to do is go and get it lanced and drained by a doctor or nurse. If you don't, the bacteria could spread to other places in your body.

Preaching aside, paracetamol (or if you're American) Acetaminophen/Tylenol would be best.

Antibiotics to kill the infection, then you need to get a root canal procedure done. The abscess can come back if the root canal is not properly cleaned and filled by a dentist.
