Ovulation is when a woman releases an egg from one (or both in some rare cases) of her ovaries. This generally happens once a month. If this egg is fertilised, the woman is then pregnant.

Women tend to ovulate two weeks before their next period is due to begin. As the cycle varies between different women, this would usually mean that ovulation takes place anywhere between days 10 and 18 of the menstrual cycle, counting day one as the first day of your menstrual flow, but there are no hard and fast rules that you can apply here.

Do be aware, however, that although you will usually hear that a woman ovulates somewhere around the middle of her monthly cycle, a woman generally starts the ovulation process during the last day of her menstruation or sometimes the day after that. This means that you could become pregnant as soon as your period ends; there really is no totally "safe" time to have unprotected sex.

There are various ways to determine if you are ovulating or not. If you observe that the cervical mucus appears clear and slippery, then it is a a sign that you are probably fertile. Another way to determine ovulation is tracking your body temperature. If it increases by 1 degree, it means that you are likely to be fertile.

Alternatively, using an ovulation kit is often seen as a more precise tool to calculate ovulation. Ovulation calculators can also used if you are having regular periods.

For a woman with a cycle that is exactly 28 days, ovulation will usually occur 14 days before the start of her next menstrual period, which is exactly 14 days after the start of her last menstrual period. However, since many women don't have a period that lasts exactly 28 days, it can be somewhat difficult to know when ovulation does occur. One common misconception about when ovulation occurs is that it will always occur exactly 14 days after the start of their menstrual period. The fact of the matter is, it is more accurate to say that ovulation will occur approximately 14 days before the start of the next menstrual period. Thus, if a woman has a cycle that typically lasts 32 days, she will ovulate on day 18 following the start of her last menstrual period, rather than on day 14 following her last menstrual period.

Ovulation is the release of a single, mature egg from the ovarian follicle. The human ovary produces a multitude of ova during the course of a month, largest of which is expelled into the pelvic cavity and swept into the Fallopian tube. Ovulation does not follow a regular pattern between ovaries each cycle and which ovary releases the egg is fairly arbitrary. Once released, the egg is capable of being fertilized for 12 to 24 hours before it begins to disintegrate. If the released ovum or egg is fertilized and successfully implants, it results in pregnancy. If the egg is not fertilized, it is passed from the reproductive tract during menstrual bleeding, which starts about two weeks after ovulation. Occasionally, cycles occur in which an egg is not released; these are called anovulatory cycles. Note that you can get your period even though you are not ovulating. Your ability to ovulate can vary from month to month.

She can get a crude idea by keeping track of which day in her period she's at. But bodies aren't clockwork, so this method isn't particularly reliable. She can also monitor her temperature closely. More work, but better accuracy. Or she can get a test, much like the OTC preg tests that will tell her when she's ovulating.

When a woman is ovulating it means that her ovarian tubes are preparing to send the egg down to her uterus to be fertilized by a sperm cell. However, if this doesnt happen, we have our periods to flush it out.

Can you use ovulation predictor kits as early pregnancy tests?

An ovulation predictor kit is used to help women keep track of ovulation when they are trying to conceive. Pregnancy tests are designed to predict a special hormone in the body that pregnant women have. Since an ovulation kit is not designed to detect that pregnancy hormone, it cannot be used as an early pregnancy test or any other type of pregnancy test for that matter. OPK's and pregnancy test are not designed alike, and are not meant for the same purpose.
