Neurotransmitters are a substance found on the end of a nerve that communicates with another nerve, thus transmitting a message or an impulse. Psychoactive drugs affect neurotransmitters by interrupting how the neurotransmitter affects the cell by either blocking or over producing an impulse. For example, the neurotransmitter, GABA, reduces anxiety. When a person drinks any alcohol, it binds with GABA and increases any affects, which makes the person feel more inhibited (Ciccarelli and White, 2009).

Different classes of drugs affect different classes of neuotransmitters. It is a rather complex discussion for this venue, but suffice it to say, that if a drug enters the brain (not all do or can), they will have some effect on some neurotransmitter. They will affect either the synthesis, storage, release, receptor interaction, or reuptake/metabolism of the neurotransmitter.

What drugs are psychoactive drugs?

(1) Psychoactive drugs are chemical substances that affect the brain functioning, causing changes in behavior, mood and consciousness. While these drugs can be used therapeutically to treat both physical and psychological disorders, they are also used recreationally to alter mood, perceptions and consciousness [jwshearin]; (2) More specifically, they are chemicals which significantly boost or reduce/block brain neurotransmitters - in the case of dopamine, far beyond the usual changes brought about by bio-survival activities like eating food and having sex (eg. heroin boosts dopamine 200% above normal levels, cocaine by 400%, and methamphetamine by up to 1100%) [Newcombe]
