First, the air comes into the nasal cavity (nose), or into the oral cavity (your mouth). Then, it goes down the pharynx, and is allowed past the epiglottis into the larynx, where it passes through the vocal cords. Next, the air goes into the trachea. After that, the bronchi/ bronchioles bring the air to the alveolar sacs in the lungs. The diaphragm muscles below the lungs are what draw air in and push it out. The ribs protect your heart and lungs so they will not get bruised. They are part of the skeletal system, but help your respiratory system to function.

There are six major parts of a respiratory system. They are the nostrils where air is intaken, the trachea through which it passes, the bronchi that carry the air to the lungs, the lungs which is the main respiratory organ, the alveolus where gaseous exchange occurs and the diaphragm where breathing originates.
