As long as it's kept in accordance with the instructions, and there are no other indications or specific instructions on shelf life, medications can last years past their expiration date. One key exception is anything containing aspirin, as it degrades over a relatively short period. It's easy to tell if it's degraded by the smell.

Drug expiration dates are indicators of full potency, not end of life. Over time, the drug potency will degrade, but it doesn't mean it's not entirely effective. It's important how the drugs are stored as well; cool, dry spaces in their original containers are the best, unless there are specific storage indications (e.g., it has to be refrigerated).

For many things the 'best use by date' is not a 'don't use date' but in this case, it means what it says.
