I'd say about a week.

****It depends on what you mean by "off heroin". It will be out of your bloodstream by day 3. The withdrawl symptoms (often like the flu) with subside within a week. Mentally, some people never get "over" heroin and think about the high several times a day, every day.

I was on opiates for nearly 15 years and after some legal trouble had to stop. Physical withdrawal took me approx. 5 months and the mental took approx. 5 more months. So altogether, I honestly say that it takes 10-12 months to totally be off the opiates both physical and mental. In the beginning, I would of never believed it was possible to feel normal again or get up in the morning without thinking about a pill, but guess what, it will happen and u will feel normal!! I'm living proof!

I'm not sure how anyone could even assess the length or amount of attempts it takes to get clean because what an attempt is or whether someone is trying to get clean or just voices the desire to be clean is so subjective. I woke up everyday for two years and attempted to not use heroin, I then spent a year trying to get and stay clean before I managed to do both for any length of time. Then two years later I used again. How long it takes depends on the junky.
