Your child should be fever- free for at least 24 hours before sending him/her back to school. Your child should have not vomited for 48 hours before you send him/her back to school. Your child should have had no diarrhea for 24 hours before you send him/her back to school. When a child has a stomach bug, it is common for there to be a 24 hour period of calm after the vomiting phase of the illness before the diarrhea starts. Therefore, 48 hours after vomiting is the minimum time you need to wait to make sure that your child is done having symptoms. (Although, your child will still be contagious for at least 3 days after all symptoms have stopped.) Your child should be able to eat normally, poop normally, and should feel well enough to want to participate in activities he/she enjoys. When in doubt, please keep your child home an extra day or two. If you allow your child to return to school too soon, you risk infecting teachers and other students and also risk your child catching a secondary illness because of his/her weakened condition. Gastrointestinal illnesses can be spread easily in a school setting. Make sure your child (and other family members) wash hands frequently....not only during illness, but always. It is the number one defense.

I would suggest that you keep them out of school for at least 24 hours after you start the antibiotics. If they have had any fever, don't send them to school until they are without a fever for at least 24 hours.

Is a sore throat contagious?

Sore throats may be caused by either bacteria or viruses. Viruses often give symptoms like runny nose, watery eyes and cough -- but not always. Bacteria (strep) usually are not associated with these "cold" symptoms. It is impossible to tell just by looking at the throat whether it is a virus or strep throat. You have to swab it. Currently, there are no antibiotics that work well against viruses that typically cause a sore throat. That's okay because the body gets rid of this on its own, so all you have to do is treat the symptoms like the pain. Strep throat needs antibiotics to cure it. A person with strep throat is considered non-infectious after the first 24 hours of antibiotics. If your child has strep throat she should stay away from others until that 24 hours is up. Viruses, on the other hand, are most infectious usually before you have symptoms, such as a sore throat so it is not necessary to keep your child home if she only has a viral sore throat. For many reasons I believe it is important not to treat a "strep throat" based upon observation alone. The throat should be swabbed for culture.

Should you be isolated if your child has scarlet fever?

Your child is not okay to go to school with scarlet fever unless he or she has been taking antibiotics for at least twenty-four hours. If the child has not been taking antibiotics for at least twenty-four hours, he or she is still highly infectious. If the child has not yet been to see a physician, he or she needs to see a physician as soon as possible.

Should you send your child to school if she has strep throat?

If you are taking them out in public, be aware that strep is contagious, and you could be passing it on to other people. Strep throat can be very serious, especially if passed on to someone with a low immune system. Strep is usually accompanied by headache, fever, nausea, muscle pain, and sometimes a rash. It is also quite painful. The child should be taken to the doctors for antibiotics, and then made to rest. The doctor should be able to tell you when the contagious period will pass. With antibiotics, it actually shouldn't be too long. Be advised that in more serious situations, strep can cause rheumatic fever. It is better to just take a couple of days and allow the child to recover. Why push it? Personally, I think if your child feels well enough to go, then there should be no reason to not let them go. Just be aware that there needs to be a back-up plan to take them home if they start to not feel well.

When should you stay home from school?

Check the child's temperature. If her temperature is more than 100.4 degrees, the child should stay home from school. A child will run a fever during the time they are contagious. She should not return to school until she has been without a fever for 24 hours. 2 Keep the child home from school if he has and continues to vomit. It is most likely a sign of a virus or food poisoning. He should stay home until he has been able to eat two meals and keep all the food down. 3 Watch the child's bathroom visits if he is complaining of an upset stomach. If he has even one spell of diarrhea, do not let him go to school. Diarrhea can cause unnecessary embarrassment and teasing for the child. 4 Look into her mouth if she has a persistent cough. If there are white spots in her throat take her to the doctor because she probably has step throat. If her throat is swollen and red, keep her home from school. If the cough does not go away with over-the-counter medications or the child begins to cough up mucus take her to the doctor. 5 Check your child if she is scratching continually. If she has a widespread rash, lice, scabies or impetigo do not let her go to school. These conditions are very contagious and can cause a breakout in the school. 6 Take your child to the doctor if he has multiple symptoms. A child with conditions such as the flu, scarlet fever, ear infections, mumps or the chickenpox should always stay home from school. Do not let your child return to school until the symptoms have been gone for at least 24 hours.

Can your child get high fever while on antibiotics?

It is possible for a child to get a fever after being on an antibiotic for three days. There are several reasons. A few of those reasons are that the child could be sick with a virus and not a bacteria, in which case the antibiotic would be useless. Another scenario is that the bacteria is resistant to the particular antibiotic and that a different one is needed. In either case, you should follow up with the child's physician.
