wrap it up with an ace bandage and don't put much weight on it for a few days. WRONG!!! Excersise the ankle, take pain killers, put ice on for 15 mins every 2 hours, keep using it like a normal ankle.

If it's a bad sprain, have a half-cast and splint put on, and try to keep your leg extended and elevated as much as you possibly can. Try not to put pressure on your foot - get some cructhes, and if you're really lazy and have access to one, get a wheelchair. Keeping your ankle/leg elevated is important. When your leg is raised, there is less bloodflow to the injured ankle, helping it heal faster. Putting ice on the injured area, and taking ibuprofen will help diminish the swelling. This is what I was told by my doctor.

There is really nothing you can do, except ice it for a couple of days.

If you are in sports you probably shouldn't go to the doctor, because if you do they will give you a slip that says no physical activities for a couple of weeks.

I hope this helps :)

The treatment for a sprained or strained ankle is encapsulated in the acronym R.I.C.E.

R = Rest

I = Ice

C = Compression

E = Elevation

Rest:

Avoid any work or anything that might worsen the injury

Ice:

Get an ice pack or cold compress and apply to the area for 10 - 20 minutes.

Compression:

Bandage the ankle to reduce pain.

Elevation:

Elevate the affected leg to reduce swelling.

If you are unsure of the severity of the condition, consult a medical practitioner as soon as possible.

Rest the ankle, ok to wrap in an elastic wrap, ice the wound for 20 minutes once to twice an hour at the begginning of treating the sprain. Rest the ankle as much as possible for the next few days.

It will heal on its own. Just stay off of it for a few days. If it is serious, a doctor could wrap it for you. Or you could wrap it yourself with some elastic bandages from your local drugstore.

That is very true that runners don't always watch where they are going and occasionally acquire injuries do to that. To treat a sprained ankle, it's best if you stay off the foot, elevate it and put some ice on it. Make sure you don't do things like running or jogging. It could make the injury much worse than it already is.

Would you be able to walk on a sprained ankle?

Usually, you can walk on a sprained ankle, but it is EXTREMELY painful. This is NOT advised. The best way to take care of a sprained ankle is to ice twice a day, 20 minutes each time, wrap it in an ace bandage or a firm, cast, and avoid moving it or walking. It is good to stretch a bit by gently moving your foot back and forth if you are able. Slow biking on a stationary bike is good conditioning, but do not run or walk too much.
