Cramping can be caused by any number of things. If it's right after you did some vigorous exercise, it can be a simple muscle strain. Some causes, like electrolyte imbalances and many neurological or metabolic diseases, would probably affect all muscles, not just one leg. There are rare exceptions, though.

Other things that can cause cramping-type pain in a leg include (but are not limited to)

- nerve problems (radiculopathy) originating in the back or lower down, like a nerve root that is getting leaned on (impinged) by a nearby structure

- neurological claudication, which is caused by narrowing of the space for the spinal cord (spinal stenosis), often relieved by leaning forward (as when pushing on a shopping cart)

- arterial claudication, caused by decreased blood flow to the leg, from blockage in an artery, often relieved by rest

- bone diseases in the leg may present with pain

If your leg gets worse over time, or if it doesn't get better with rest and over-the-counter remedies like nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) like aspirin, ibuprofen, or naproxen, you should see your health care practitioner (nurse practitioner, MD, DO) for an opinion.
