Can you take your prescription drugs on an airline without the bottle?

The above answer is incorrect. I traveled to Vienna, Austria from Pittsburgh, PA last summer and I had no problems bringing my pain medication on the plane. . .it was only in a travel container. TSA only RECOMMENDS that the medication be in a presciption container. If the above answer is correct, then the use of travel pill containers would be illegal. Even outside of the air travel context, there are plenty of people who take multiple pills daily and can only keep track of them by separating them in weekly pill containers. While police may be able to arrest you if they suspect you are illegally possessing the medication, this is different from saying that all prescriptions must be in their original bottles at all times. The crime would be possession of a controlled substance, not possession of a legal substance in an illegal bottle...pills are not treated like gasoline.

Having said that, it would probably be wise to carry medication in the original container just to be safe . . . if they suspect that the pills arent yours or that you are trafficking them (e.g. if you have too many for the length of the trip), then at the very least you will probably miss your flight due to delays.

I have found those bottles very difficult to swallow, so I have sworn off them. The results have been nothing but positive so far.
