If you like this guy than you will eventually have to talk to him. But if you want him to start the conversation than find out his interests. You dont have to talk to him to do this. Notice things about him. In my experience the guy wore a rubber bracelet that said the name of the school he was in and the band name so I knew he was in the band. Once you get this piece of information you use it! Stand in hearing distance of him and talk to your friend about how you play some instrument and say how you wish you could join the band but you have to much of a busy schedule. This is a good thing for him to talk to you about. Still you might even ask him when does band start or something like that. Even though its still talking its way easier then just making awkward small talk!
