Hiking around the Tahoe Rim Trail in 2009, my average hiking speed was about 2.6 mph. The typical altitude is in the 7,500' to 9,000' range with a maximum of 10,300' and a minimum of 6,550'. The most difficult grades were 11.8% for 2.6 miles out of Emerald Bay and 12.0% for 2.0 miles south of Echo Summit. Most other difficult grades were 8%+/- above 8,000'.
On the long steep grades, hiking speed averaged about 1.3 mph, but I have Asthma and probably emphysema from years of smoking. I'm 54, weigh 205lbs and carry about 15-20 lbs of water and gear. Younger folks are MUCH faster and hike about 3.0 - 3.4 mph, and about twice as fast as me going up hill.
