People taking this drug should also call their doctor if they experience other serious side effects. Some serious side effects are unusual bleeding (especially in the urine), hallucinations, and extreme drowsiness. Some people also experience constipation from use of this drug. 1% to 10% of people report weight gain and increased appetite. The same percentage also reports abnormal dreams. Major risk of birth defects such as spina bifida has been demonstrated among populations of female patients who took the medicine in childbearing age.

∙ 14y agoDepakote makes you crave carbs, so it is very likely for you to gain a lot of weight. When I was on depakote, over time, they had to keep raising the dose more and more. So I went off that medication.

- drowsiness
- upset stomach (if this happens take it with some food)

I have taken Depakote for almost 9 years with no side affects other some sunlight sensitivity after first starting to take the drug for bipolar manic-depression treatment. Depakote can affect the liver. A blood test for checking liver function is usually recommended. Talk to your doctor or pharamacist if you have any side affect concerns. the only skin affected side effects are: Rash, alopceia(hair loss), sensitvity to sun, and dry skin. this drug may also make you more prone to buising also according to my nursing drug handbook
