Pokemon Emerald takes place in the Hoenn region, whilst Pokemon Firered takes place in the Kanto region. Emerald was a third version of Ruby and Sapphire, when Firered and Leafgreen were remakes of the original Red and Blue. You can always trade for the Pokemon White Pokemon that you cannot get in Pokemon Black. Or if you got Pokemon White then you can trade for the Pokemon Black Pokemon. It's easy. I wanted to improve this answer, because really nothing's a big whole change. The story is the same and the trainers are the same, so is their Pokemon. So yeah.
