Entertainment and escapism. Science Fiction, or speculative fiction, is a genre of writing that uses known scientific facts and postulates future worlds and technology. The purpose of such fiction is to explore possibilities and dream up new ideas. If there were no science, there would be no science fiction, so the two go hand-in-hand. Many people are exposed to the world of scientific imagination for the first time by reading or watching science fiction!

Science fiction is where it is at. When the original Star Trek show came out they had scifi communicater devices and such. Now they are an everyday thing. Sci-fi writers are dreamers and from those dreams are where new gadget idea are born from. Good luck.

science fiction WAS A SORT OF SPIN -OFF OF THE CULTURE OF fLIGHT OF THE 1920'S COMBINING BOTH future optimism AND BELIEF IN technology AS A CURE FOR MANKIND'S PROBLEMS - ADD TO THIS THE Utopian GLEANINGS OF Verne AND Wells (LATE Victorian) AND YOU HAVE A POTENTIALLY culture ROCKING CRITICAL MASS. WW2 AND THE ROCKETS AND A-BOMB ADDED TO THE FUEL PLUS THE WIDESPREAD POPULARIZATION OF space TRAVEL BY Walt Disney AND (OF ALL people, WERNER Von BRAUN (GERMAN ROCKET SCIENTIST) AND YOU HAVE SET THE STAGE FOR POPULAR ACCLAIM. many OF NASA'S scientists WERE INSPIRED BY THIS RIP-TIDE IN THE 1950'S OF PRO-SPACE THINKING.

IN OTHER WORDS sf INSPIRES PEOPLE TO BELIEVE THAT MAN CAN SOLVE HIS PROBLEMS WITH HIS TECHNOLOGY AND THE future WILL BE BETTER.

sf has all the potential merit of every other kind of literary genre but the one that it excels in is predictions. 1984 predicts the result of unbridled belief in political leaders Fahrenheit 451 predicts the outcome of disinterest in books

A fictional story with scientific elements, which may or may not be correct.

Whether the scientific elements are correct or not is irrelevant, science-fiction refers to a fictional story with scientific content.

The role of science in science fiction novels is that there is, theoretically, some logic of science somehow tied into it. For instance, Jewels Vern's The War of the Worlds has some logic in it that in the sense that it could really happen even though it seems outrageous now it may not later on. Another example is Star Trek the movie. The screenplay writers incorporated the thought that someday there really could be star fleet and star fleet academy and things like that even though we don't have the technology today that they do in the movie. So the role is that the futuristic aspects of science fiction novels and the technologies in the novels would be the scientific approach to the genre of science fiction.
