Chaining Pokemon is somewhat difficult and cannot be explained well without diagrams. There is, however, a very good website called Psypoke that does explain it well. I know this because using it I have caught a few shinies myself, including a Bagon. -(.^.^.)-

You can chain Pokemon in Diamond, Pearl and Platinum.

To do this you need to get the Poke Radar for the Poketech, to get this you must have seen every Pokemon in the Sinnoh Pokedex, Prof. Oak (found in Prof. Rowan's lab) will then update your Pokedex to the National Dex and give you the Poke Radar.

You, then, access a area of grass (where wild Pokemon are) and use the Poke Radar to find Pokemon by using it from your bag in the Key Items category. The grass will shake in spots around you to show where you can find Pokemon. I personally use a Max Repels first so that I don't get disturbed by non-radar Pokemon.

Once you have battled the first Pokemon in the shaking grass, there will be more shaking grass. Make sure you go into the same looking grass as the first one that shook.

There are 3 types:

  • Common - Normal-looking shaking grass.
  • Rare - Grass that shakes and looks whitish.
  • Shiny - Grass that doesn't shake but has sparkles.

If you enter the wrong grass or accidentally run, it will break the chain. Battling a different Pokemon will also break the chain.

Unfortunately, no you cannot. It's extremely hard to find Pokemon in the GBA games, so that's why I don't transfer the ones I find on GBA games to my DS Pokemon games. I suggesy SRing (soft reseting) or tromping through grass for a while.
