There are a lot of ways. Here's one, assuming you have a lot of water available and don't mind wasting some.

Fill the 3 oz cup, pour it into the 5 oz cup, which has 2 oz left empty.

Fill the 3 oz cup again and pour it into the 5 oz cup until that cup is full.

You now have 1 oz in the 3 oz cup.

Dump out the 5 oz from the 5 oz cup.

Pour the 1 oz into the 5 oz cup.

Fill the 3 and dump it into the 5 oz cup, giving 4 oz.

there is also a another way 2

Fill the 3oz container and pour the contents into the 5oz container.

There is now 3oz in the 5oz container.

Fill the 3oz container and fill the 5oz container with the contents of the 3oz container.

The 5oz container is now full, and the 3oz container holds 1oz.

Empty the 5oz container and pour the contents of the 3oz container into the 5oz container.

There is now 1oz in the 5oz container.

Fill the 3oz container and pour the contents into the 5oz container.

There is now 4oz in the 5oz container. some what different

If you fill a 5 gallon jug then pour all you can into the 3 gallon jug you are left with 2 gallons of water in the 5 gallon jug. You then empty the 3 gallon jug and pour the 2 gallons of water in the 5 gallong jug into the 3 gallon jug Now you have 2 gallons of water in the 3 gallon jug and no water in the 5 gallon jug Fill the 5 gallon jug up with water Now you have a full 5 gallon jug and a 3 gallon jug with 2 gallons of water top off the 3 gallon jug with water from the 5 gallon jug Now you have 4 gallons of water in the 5 gallon jug and a full 3 gallon jug empty the 3 gallon jug Now you have an empty 3 gallon jug and 4 gallons of water in a 5 gallon jug. Fill the 3 gallon jug using the water in the 5 gallon jug. You now have a 3 gallon jug full of water and 1 gallon of water in a 5 gallon jug

Fill the 3 cup and pour into the 5 cup. refill the 3 cup and pour the 2 cups that it will take to fill the 5 cup. When the 5 cup is full, you know that there is one cup left in the 3 cup.

3+2=5

3-2=1

I'm sorry about the first answer, but here is this. All you have to do is fill up a cup, a measuring cup will work best. Then, find where it says 1/5, and measure what you're measuring to that line. Then you have 1/5.
