How can I get an AARP discount on a car rental?

You have to make sure to choice a rental place that offers the discount and then present an AARP membership card. The discount is offered by all of the major car renters and can be as much as one quarter of the price of the rental(Alamo, Hertz and Avis make that claim). If you want the discount over the phone or internet you'll need the membership number on your AARP card. The best way to get an AARP discount on a car rental is by joining AARP. There are discounts extended to AARP members, not merely with car rentals. However there are several places that offer AARP discounts. These include Alamo, Budget, Avis and Hertz to name a few. How much of our tax goes to AARP?

None, zilch, zero... AARP is not a government organization. It is supported by it's members, who pay a membership fee. Founded in 1958, AARP is a nonprofit, nonpartisan membership organization that helps people 50 and over improve the quality of their lives. AARP has grown to 40 million members and has offices in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

How much did AARP donate to the Democratic Party in 2008?

That is a good question that has answers in lots of different places. First of all it is important to note that, as the AARP says; the "AARP is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization with a membership that helps people 50+ . . . the AARP does not endorse candidates for public office or make contributions to either political campaigns or candidates." So strictly speaking the answer to your question is "nothing." But the AARP is an aggressive lobbying organization on behalf of its membership. And it has placed commercial advertising on current issues particularly Social Security and Medicare which are of importance to its membership. And officers and directors of the AARP, as independent citizens, can make political contributions to political parties and candidates for election, just as you can. Those contributions usually follow the overall goals of the organization, as would be expected.
