Well I went and expiremented on this. I got 2 cups of water in a pan but it on my stove at high and it took 4 minutes for it to really get those bubbles going. (not overflowing)

Please do NOT boil water in the microwave, it is very dangerous.

So to your answer it is four minutes. (on the stove)

P.S. you may here some noise before 4 minutes but that's just when its getting started around 3 minutes.

This depends on the efficient power of the heating device or fire and on the starting temperature.

Example: You have a 1000W water boiler and 2 cups of water of 20 degrees(room temperature).

It would take you about 2 minutes.
But if the water boiler was cheap, it's efficiency could be far worse and the time would increase.

Ranked from most important to less important, that depends on:

  • the amount of water in the cup
  • the ambient temperature
  • the heatsource used (gas / electric / microwave etc)
  • the size and material of the cup
  • the altitude at which you are situated
  • the weather (air pressure)
