I am still employed at a restaurant. It's a Pizza chain, Uno Chicago Grill, and it's an interesting place to work. I myself am a dishwasher. I wash all the dishes and pans, clean certain parts of the kitchen, and take out the trash. When I work morning shift I sweep and mop the whole restaurant lobby, maybe do the windows or polish the woodwork, before the customers arrive.
The main part of my job, washing dishes, requires a strong stomach. It's hard to imagine from an outside perspective how many discarded bits of food get thrown back there. Oh, it gets messy. And have you ever seen a grease trap? Not a pretty sight. Ever cleaned a mop sink? Better grab some gloves.
I stay there because the GM, the managers, and a lot of the employees appreciate the work I do. They all realize that my job inherently sucks but I stay there, do my job, and don't complain. For this, they all seem to respect me a great deal. When I get screwed somehow (coworker doesnt show up, blah blah blah) the cooks and a few of the managers have been known to come to my dish pit to help me out.
Disgusting, nasty job. Great work environment, though. It's kinda nice being in the back, not making food. I get to watch all the politics going on between the servers and cooks and managers, meanwhile I stand there, do my job, and laugh (not to mention hit on all the hot waitresses)
