Peeta has more of an idea of where Katniss is, and the careers are thick enough to believe that he is thick enough to know that they will let him live if they find her. They have to kill Katniss because she got a 11 in training, and therefore has some secret weapon.

∙ 11y agoWell the careers were quite jealous that Katniss scored an 11 in her pre-game rating. The highest score of all the tributes.
They let Peeta join their group because he might know where to find her so they could kill her.
Peeta found this an opportunity to be safe.
