The song's main themes are love, nostalgia and regret.

Adele is reminiscing about a period of her past with an ex-lover by indirectly speaking to him. The song conveys how although their relationship has long since ended, she still feels strong emotion for the man, vividly remembers their time together and illustrates a significant sense of sorrowful loss. However, in spite of feeling melancholic when thinking about the relationship which is now over, it is evident that she is moving on and "wishes nothing but the best for him too".
